Livelihood Improvement of Marginalized Communities through Effective Ponds' Management

Indreni Rural Development Center Nepal (IRDC Nepal) has been implementing Livelihood Improvement of Tharu Communities through Effective Management of Ponds in Buddhabhumi Municipality of Kapilvastu with the supports of IM Swedish Development Partner and The Charitable Foundation of Australia.

     The major objective of this project is Improve livelihoods of the targeted farmers through sustainable management of ponds, crop diversification and   commercialization, demonstrating climate resilient livelihoods model with potential for replication, up-scaling and also out-scaling.

This project is being implemented in a payback model. In this model the communities utilize the project money as a loan without interest in the rehabilitation of community pond to increase water volume which could be used in irrigation, fish farming and other kinds of income generating purposes. After certain period of time based on enterprises that community run, the community return / payback the amount to the revolving fund of IRDC which is again utilized to other communities continuously.

Now 6 ponds are rehabilitated through this project. Of them 4 are in Buddhabhumi Municipality (a) Brija pond Barkalpur (b) Bargadi pond Tingharawa (c) Buddi pond Buddi and (d) Dakshintal Maitahawa and 2 in Bijaynagar Rural Municipality (e) Baddaur tal Baddaur (f) Duduratal Dhodhari.
